Lemons are a versatile fruit good for your warding off cold symptoms, in natural cleaning, and even in the garden. But did you know that one of the best ways to use lemons is for DIY skin care?
Lemons have a large number of properties that make them great to use for your everyday skin care. There are a number of qualities in lemons that can better your appearance without any harsh chemicals. Here are six ways that you can incorporate them into your beauty routine.
Body Sugaring Paste
Sugaring is a form of organic waxing that has been attributed to the Middle East. Lemon can be used in this natural homemade wax. Sugaring is made by a special, sticky sugary concoction, either in gel or paste form, that adheres to the hair. The great thing about it is that, unlike wax, it doesn’t attach to the skin. The sticky ball of sugar paste is rolled in the direction of the hair growth and the hair is then removed without removing any of the skin.
To Make:
- Combine 2 cups of white cane sugar, ¼ cup of water, and ¼ cup lemon juice in a saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, watching stirring constantly so it doesn’t burn. If you have it, use a candy thermometer and get it to reach 250 degrees F. The finished product should be a golden color, not brown and burnt.
- Remove from the heat and let it cool for 15 minutes.
- Store extra sugaring in a microwave-safe container so you can reheat before using.
To Use: You want it to use body sugaring paste when it is warm but not hot. When done cooling, roll it into a ball and place on the desired area. Pull in the opposite direction that hair grows, and repeat until all the unwanted hair is removed.
Lemon Oat Organic Face Scrub
Lemon Juice has antibacterial properties, which is why it is said to have an acne-fighting ability. This face scrub works very well on oily skin and it is not as harsh as some acne medications.
To make: Use the juice from a freshly squeezed lemon plus an equal amount of water. Combine in a bowl. Add enough rolled oats to form a paste, and additional water if needed. Massage onto your face for about 30 seconds. Then rinse with warm water.
Try Chamomile Oat scrub for a variation and there are other exfoliating foods to try.
Lemon Cucumber Toner
Follow up by using fresh lemon and cucumber as a toner. Homemade lemon cucumber tober is a great way to get your skin happy and acne-free skin. This recipe calls for 2 lemons, distilled water, 1 cucumber, and an 8-ounce canning jar with a lid.
To make: Juice one lemon, measure the amount and place it in a small bowl. Measure an equal amount of distilled water and combine with the lemon in the small bowl. Cut lemon and cucumber slices no more than 1/8th of an inch thick and place them in alternating layers in the 8-ounce canning jar. Add the lemon juice and water into a jar.
To use: Lemon cucumber toner is fresh and requires refrigeration. Dip a cotton ball into the toner and apply to your face as needed.
Hair Rinse
Lemons can reduce the dullness of your hair and give it a shine. When using lemon juice in the shower, you can skip shampooing your hair. While in the shower (make sure it’s warm water) just pour about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice onto the palm of your hand and rub into your hair slowly. Wait about a minute before rinsing out of your hair.
An alternative use is to add equal parts of lemon juice and water or equal parts of lemon juice and conditioner. Experiment and see which works best on your hair type.
Lemon Chamomile Natural Highlights
Lemon juice is a more organic way to get natural highlights. In addition, it’s significantly cheaper than going to a salon. Add the juice of one lemon to one cup of strongly brewed chamomile tea. Place it in a spray bottle and spritz our hair before going out in the sun.
This method of natural highlights won’t work for everyone, though. It’s best for people who have lighter hair. You should start seeing results in about 30 days.
Lemon Body Scrub
Lemon is astringent, fragrant, and invigorating for your body and especially for your face. Salt scrubs should not be every day because they can be rough on your skin, but using them once a week would be ideal. This lemon scrub recipe helps to restore the natural pH levels to your skin and is proven to help fight depression as the wonderful smell of lemons calms your body.
- 1 tablespoon Lemon zest
- ¼ cup Kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon + ¼ teaspoon Sunflower oil
- 3 drops lemon EO (optional)
When making this scrub, you will need the zest from one small lemon, kosher salt, and sunflower oil. Combine the three ingredients into small bowl and stir. Transfer to a 4-ounce jar for storage. For best results, scoop the scrub out of the jar with a spoon instead of your fingers so any oils on your fingertips won’t mix in with your scrub.
